The Detective Is Already Dead will end with light novel volume 15

The light novel The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mo, Shindeiru.) will end with its next volume. Author nigozyu confirmed it this Friday during the release of volume 14, in the notes included in the edition illustrated by Umibozu.

The announcement hit like a bucket of cold water for those who have followed Kimihiko and Siesta for years. With the plot moving forward in the printed pages, the ending makes sense, but it still hurts. Volume 15 will mark the final point for the main narrative.

The announcement comes at a great moment for the franchise. Besides the main story, the series expanded in May 2024 with the spin-off volume Charlotte wa Tada, Jiken o Tokitai. Tantei wa Mo, Shindeiru. Code:RED, written by Hoko Hinachi and Minori Chigusa under the direct supervision of nigozyu.

A franchise that keeps growing

The work also had a manga adaptation, illustrated by Mugiko. It began in May 2020 and ended its serialization in October 2023 with six collected volumes.

The original series started in November 2019 under Kadokawa's MF Bunko J label, after winning first place in the publisher's fifteenth new talent contest that same year. It mixes mystery, romantic comedy, and action.

The story follows Kimihiko Kimizuka, a young man who attracts suspicious incidents like a magnet. His life changes when he becomes the assistant of Siesta, a brilliant detective who secretly fights an organization of modified beings. Tragedy strikes when Siesta loses her life, and Kimihiko tries to return to an ordinary routine that breaks when the ghosts of the past come knocking again.

The anime produced by studio ENGI debuted in July 2021 with a first season of twelve episodes. The second season began airing on October 7.
