Animate launches FW Comics Scarlatta, its digital josei imprint
The group debuts a digital manga imprint aimed at adult women, with stories of infidelity, workplace harassment, and revenge.
Frontier Works, part of the Animate group, launched FW Comics Scarlatta on October 23, a digital manga imprint aimed at adult female readers. The line focuses on sharper josei: infidelity, relationship troubles, and conflicts between women at work.
This is not an imprint of gentle stories. The catalog opens with three titles that go straight for the less comfortable emotions, the ones girls' manga tends to gloss over or avoid entirely.
Three titles to open the catalog
The first is already available. Saretsuma no Watashi ga Shiawase ni Naru made, with art by Ayi and story by Kashiwamiya, has been on the Manga Oukoku platform since October 23. The protagonist deals with a husband who psychologically abuses her and a toxic mother-in-law, until she finds a message suggesting he is cheating on her. That discovery pushes her to change her life.
The other two titles do not have a release date yet. In Shanai Seisai: Akujo no Uso wa Abakareru, with art by Itou Yuzuta and story by Matsukaze Wakaba, an employee is isolated by a coworker and, with the help of an ally, fights back. In Sono Koi, Jigoku-iki: High-spec Kareshi no Ura no Kao, by Taniguchi Chika and Yoneyama Yone, a worker in the accounting department gets caught up in absurd harassment and a relationship with a man hiding far more than he appears to.
All three titles share a similar starting point: women who hit rock bottom and decide to push back. There are no princesses or high school romances, and it is nice to see a publisher bet on this tone without apologizing.
An imprint for readers who are no longer teenagers
The launch comes at a time when digital manga for adult women is moving more and more money in Japan. Frontier Works is not entering empty territory, but it is betting on a recognizable catalog: short, direct stories with a touch of spice that works very well in digital reading.
To celebrate the launch, the official X account (FW_comics) is running a follow-and-repost campaign. Participants enter a drawing for a 1,000-yen Quo card. It is organized by Frontier Works and has no connection to the X platform itself.
It remains to be seen whether the imprint keeps up its publishing pace and whether any of these titles get licensed outside Japan. For now, the initial catalog makes clear the kind of reader it is targeting: one who does not need anything sugarcoated.
