Manga 'Yome no Kokoro Shūtome Shirazu' goes viral over mother-in-law's wedding condition
Maru-chan's series, based on her own experience, shows a future mother-in-law's demand during the first family meeting
The first meeting with future in-laws tends to be a tense moment. In the manga Yome no Kokoro Shūtome Shirazu (嫁の心姑知らず), by author Maru-chan, that tension turns into a direct demand: the groom's mother announces she won't attend the wedding unless the couple lives near her house. The episode, posted on Instagram, has sparked a wave of comments urging the protagonist to reconsider the marriage.
Maru-chan, who works as a preschool teacher, publishes this series on her Instagram account and on the blog Maru-chan no Kyō mo Hanamaru. The chapter opens with the protagonist, Aiko, explaining to her fiancé's parents that the new home will be near her job and her own parents' house. The future mother-in-law's response is the condition that gives the episode its title: if they don't move near her, she won't come to the ceremony.
Readers reacted harshly. Among the comments collected by the author are phrases like "better reconsider the wedding," "the best thing is to cut ties with a toxic mother," or "if you give in once, she'll take advantage forever." The debate didn't stay in fiction: Maru-chan herself confirmed that the story comes from a real event.
"This episode is based on my own experience. That's why I resolved it in a similar way to how Aiko does. Leaving my job was very frustrating and living far from my family made me feel insecure and sad, but I didn't want to worry my parents. I moved with the firm intention of not staying there for long."
A series that continues into married life
The story doesn't end at the wedding. Maru-chan keeps the series ongoing and currently publishes a second part, Kekkon Seikatsu-hen (結婚生活編), focused on Aiko's life after marriage. According to the author, the protagonist continues to deal with her mother-in-law's meddling, something readers already anticipated in the comments on the first chapter.
The audience's reaction didn't surprise the author. "Almost all the comments said the best thing was to reconsider the wedding," she explains. And she adds, with irony: "As everyone feared, Aiko had a life ahead of her going around in circles around her mother-in-law."
The series Yome no Kokoro Shūtome Shirazu remains available on Instagram and on the author's blog, where chapters are published as the story progresses. There is, for now, no announcement of a print collection or distribution outside those platforms.
