Frieren hits one year on hiatus with no signs of returning

Exactly what nobody wanted just happened: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has been on hiatus for a full year. Chapter 147 came out on October 14, 2025 in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday, and since then there hasn't been a single new chapter or a return date.

The hiatus was announced as indefinite due to health issues for Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, the creators of the series. And it hurts more because this isn't the first time the manga has stopped. It already had several breaks and long hiatuses before this one, which has become the longest since it began publication in 2020.

And keep in mind, the manga keeps selling like hotcakes in Japan even while on hiatus. That says a lot about how much people love this story and, above all, how well the anime has worked to bring in new readers.

Season 3 arrives in fall 2027

While the manga isn't moving, the anime does have a date: the third season premieres in October 2027, within the fall schedule. Madhouse returns as the studio and much of the team is also back, with Tomoya Kitagawa directing, Tomomi Suzuki on composition, Maru Takase and Keisuke Kojima on character designs, and Evan Call on music.

This new season will adapt the Golden Land arc, the biggest in the series so far, and will introduce Macht, considered the strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction. That said, no one has been announced to voice him yet.

If you want to stay up to date with the anime, the first two seasons are available on Crunchyroll. And if you want to know what happens next, you'll need to be patient: the manga still has no return date and there's no official update for now.
