The Long Summer of August 31 manga volume 13 launches August 21, 2026
Kodansha confirms the new collected volume of Itto Ito's manga, which closes the fake family arc with the visit of Manatsu's mother.
Volume 13 of The Long Summer of August 31 (8-gatsu 31-nichi no Long Summer) has a release date. Kodansha will put it on sale on August 21, 2026, the publisher announced. Itto Ito's manga is still running in Morning magazine.
The news comes with the volume's synopsis, which closes the "fake family" arc. With Akabane and Suzui joining in, the group of five had been playing at being a family for a while. That game ends when Manatsu's mother comes to visit. To bring back Manatsu's smile, the group goes to a place the synopsis does not reveal.
It has to be said: this manga is not your typical school romance. The premise rests on a time loop that repeats over and over on August 31. Suzuki and Takagi, two high school students, are the only ones who keep their memories between one repetition and the next. The trigger for the loop, according to the work itself, could be something as simple as the male goal Suzuki failed to achieve during summer vacation.
What could have stayed a comedy of errors becomes a story about memory and the relationships built when no one else remembers what happened yesterday. The loop forces the protagonists to repeat the same day, but it also gives them the chance to get to know each other without the consequences a normal summer would bring. That tension between the ephemeral and the permanent is what has kept interest in the series alive.
Ito has known how to pace the information. Each arc introduces a new character to the loop and changes the rules of the game. First it was the two protagonists, then more people who started to remember joined in. The fake family arc, which now ends, explored how a group of strangers can simulate family bonds when time does not move forward.
An arc closing and volume 14 on the way
Volume 13 is not the end of the series. Kodansha has already confirmed that volume 14 will come out on December 22, 2026. It's a steady publishing pace, with two collected volumes in just over four months.
The Japanese edition of volume 13 arrives with ISBN 978-4065447314. For those who collect the series, the data helps locate the exact edition among the different printings.
The manga began serialization in Morning, a Kodansha seinen magazine that has housed titles like Space Brothers and Giant Killing. Ito's series fits that profile: a manga that uses the romantic comedy label to talk about something more uncomfortable, the difficulty of connecting with another person when time stops.
The arc now ending left moments that divide readers. The fake family dynamic worked to develop Akabane and Suzui, but it also stretched a premise that was asking to move toward the origin of the loop. Now that Manatsu's mother enters the scene, the story seems to be heading toward answers.
We'll have to see if volume 13 resolves anything of the central mystery or if Ito prefers to hold his cards for the next volume. With volume 14 dated for December, the wait won't be long.
