New Kusuriya no Hitorigoto novel launches December 9 with manga adaptation
The film project expands with a novel written by Natsu Hyūga and a manga adaptation starting the same day.
The Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) franchise adds a new format. Imagica Infos announced that the novel Shōsetsu Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bōhi no Hihō will go on sale on December 9, the same day the manga adaptation starts on the Sunday Webry platform. Two days later, on December 11, the film that gave rise to the whole project hits Japanese theaters.
This is not your typical novelization. Natsu Hyūga, author of the original novels, wrote a new story for the feature film. But not everything fit on screen. What was left out now becomes a standalone novel, with additional episodes that expand the film's story. Hyūga doesn't adapt the script: she writes the novel from her own material.
The approach is reminiscent of Japanese multimedia projects in recent years, where a single story is told across several formats at once. There's a particularity here: the original author is involved on all three fronts. The story is hers, the film adapts it, the manga serializes it, and the novel develops it with the freedom that prose allows.
A story born from an imperial order
The plot begins with a direct order from the emperor to Jinshi. His work as a eunuch is over, and now he must act as an imperial brother. The mission: fulfill the last wish of a consort who died in the rear palace five years ago. She wanted to return to her homeland.
Jinshi and Maomao travel south with the body of the deceased. They arrive at a bustling water city, full of markets and activity. Maomao, as always, takes an interest in unfamiliar plants and medicines. But the city has a serious problem: river pirates causing chaos. The synopsis makes it clear: "Let's hope nothing happens." Of course, it does. On the day of the funeral, an incident erupts that turns the journey into something far more complicated.
The official synopsis mentions three elements: the secret hidden in the consort's body, a treasure sleeping in the water city, and a child who holds the key to the story. The tone moves away from the usual palace atmosphere of the series. The cover shows Maomao and Jinshi in a cave, lit by a torch, with a shining treasure and a battle with fire arrows in the background. Less court, more adventure.
Edition details
The novel costs 946 yen including tax. It's published by Imagica Infos and distributed by Shufunotomo. The ISBN is 978-4-07-464395-0.
At the end of the volume there's an extra worth mentioning: original character design illustrations by Touko Shino. Shino has illustrated the original novels since 2014 and also handles the character designs for the film. The book includes her comments on each design, explaining what she wanted to convey with each character.
The first edition comes with a special obi featuring the film's main visual. It shows Maomao, Jinshi, and a mysterious boy named Mùqīng. The artwork depicts the cave, the treasure lit by Maomao's torch, and, in the background, the shore in flames with incendiary arrows crossing the sky. A radical shift from the restrained elegance of the palace corridors.
A launch that measures the state of the franchise
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto has over 57 million copies in circulation worldwide. It's one of the strongest franchises right now, with anime, manga, and novels running at the same time. This triple December launch is a test of how the Japanese industry squeezes a successful property without resorting to simple recycling.
The move is different from other franchises. This isn't a novelization that comes out after the film to capitalize on the premiere. Here the three products launch at once and share a common origin: the story Hyūga wrote for the screen. The novel arrives two days before the film. The manga starts the same day as the novel. Anyone who wants the full story will have to go through all three formats.
The synopsis already hints that the consort's funeral is the breaking point. From there, the story gets complicated. And with Hyūga at the helm of the text, the novel promises to develop at its own pace what the film can barely sketch.
