Panini Manga releases the first volume of Vida entre libros in Spain

Kojima Ao's work depicts the daily life of a second-hand bookseller and the generational clash between readers and collectors

Juan Castillo 6 November 2026

Panini Manga releases in Spain the first volume of Vida entre libros, the work by Kojima Ao known in Japan as Hon Nara Uru Hodo. The series has been serialized in Enterbrain's Harta magazine since September 2023, but it started as a one-shot in 2022.

The story follows a second-hand bookseller who runs October Books. The manga portrays the day-to-day of the business and focuses on the generational clash between readers and collectors. It's not an action or fantasy manga: it's a look at the world of physical books from the inside, with everything that entails.

The used book circuit as a stock management system

One of the most interesting aspects of the work is how it documents the process of acquiring volumes from the homes of the deceased. This practice works as an inventory intake channel for second-hand bookstores. Kojima Ao shows how lots are assessed, copies with no commercial potential are discarded, and the paper of those that find no buyer is recycled.

This flow of materials presents a model of publishing sustainability in which the physical book circulates beyond its first useful life. The selection criteria mix bibliographic knowledge and economic viability. It's not just bookish romanticism: there are numbers behind every decision.

Your bookshelf also deserves an inventory audit

If you've ever looked at your books and thought there's too much paper gathering dust, don't worry: the protagonist of this story makes a living rummaging through other people's homes to decide which volume deserves another chance and which one ends up turned into paper pulp. A profession that turns library weeding into an art, and that proves getting rid of a book is not a crime, but an editorial decision.

The manga arrives in Spain from Panini Manga. The work already has a track record in Japan, with serialization in Harta since 2023. Vida entre libros joins a catalog that explores stories around the physical book and the trades that surround it.

I'm interested in that less romantic side of the bookstore: deciding which books can find another reader and which ones are no longer moving.
