Mashle gets live-action film in March 2027, starring Mackenyu and directed by Yuichi Fukuda
The adaptation of Hajime Komoto's work is handled by CREDEUS, the studio behind the Kingdom and Sakamoto Days hits.
The Mashle manga is getting a live-action film. The adaptation of the Weekly Shonen Jump hit will open in Japanese theaters on March 19, 2027, with Mackenyu Maeda in the lead and Yuichi Fukuda directing and writing. CREDEUS, the studio behind the Kingdom and Sakamoto Days adaptations, is producing.
The announcement came on November 4, and the lead actor and director were confirmed a day later. Mackenyu, who signed as Arata Mackenyu until October 31, is known for Rurouni Kenshin: The Final and Netflix's One Piece series. Fukuda, for his part, directed the Gintama live-action film and the recent Sakamoto Days.
What Mashle is about
Hajime Komoto's story ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from January 2020 to July 2023, with 18 collected volumes. The film's official site puts worldwide circulation at 12 million copies. The protagonist is Mash, a boy with no magical powers in a world where magic is everything, who makes up for that lack with pure muscle while aiming to become a Divine Visionary, the elite of his magic school.
The anime aired in 2023 and 2024. The second season left behind a viral opening, "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born," and the third will arrive in January 2027, just two months before the film opens. That schedule doesn't seem casual: anyone who discovers the story with the new season will have the adaptation in theaters almost immediately.
The team behind the film
The production follows the usual Japanese film model: a production committee with Warner Bros. Japan and Fuji Television as lead companies, CREDEUS handling the shoot, and Toho distributing. Warner has spent years backing local productions with Japanese crews and casts, and Rurouni Kenshin (2012) was one of its first examples. That said, the company shut down its Japanese theatrical distribution business at the end of 2025, so here that task falls to Toho.
CREDEUS is led by Shinzo Matsuhashi, a producer who left WOWOW and went independent in 2005. He has worked on Gintama, Golden Kamuy, and Blue Lock, and according to Shogakukan data his productions surpassed 100 billion yen in cumulative box office in 2026.
Its biggest calling card is Kingdom, based on Yasuhisa Hara's manga. The first four films have grossed over 24.5 billion yen combined, and the fifth, released in July 2026, reached 5.16 billion in its first 26 days. With that, it became the first Japanese live-action franchise with five consecutive entries above 5 billion. Kento Yamazaki has played the protagonist Shin in all five.
Sakamoto Days, Yuto Suzuki's manga about a retired hitman protecting his family life, also went through Fukuda and CREDEUS. Its film, starring Ren Meguro, opened on April 29, 2026, and grossed 2.23 billion yen in 21 days, with 1.61 million admissions. Another title from the studio, Kokuhō (2025), became the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in history in November 2025.
What makes Mashle different
CREDEUS's pattern rests on three pillars: a title with pull, a big team, and a lead who prepares thoroughly. In Mashle's case, Fukuda called Mackenyu right after getting the green light for the adaptation, and the actor spent about three years getting in shape for the role.
But there are differences from the studio's other big hits. Kingdom has been running since 2006 and Sakamoto Days is still ongoing; Mashle, by contrast, is already finished. That changes the room for maneuver when adapting the story, because the ending is written.
The tone is also a different challenge. Kingdom and Sakamoto Days live on action and epic scale, but Mashle mixes magical battles with comedy built on a deadpan character who breaks the world's rules with total nonchalance. Making the magic impress and the jokes land in live action is not the same as shooting a large-scale battle.
The film opens on March 19, 2027 in Japan. It remains to be seen whether it will reach other countries and through what distribution. Does Mackenyu's casting for Mash convince you? Tell us in the comments.
