Tempalay performs Fool Night opening with "Shake! spit out"

The Japanese trio wrote the song for the Netflix anime, which arrives on November 26 with production by Sunrise and Shaft.

Tempalay is behind the opening theme for the Fool Night anime. The Japanese band wrote "Shake! spit out" for the series, which Netflix releases worldwide on November 26 with all episodes available at once.

The announcement was made by the anime's official account on November 5, and along with the news came the main trailer, where the song can already be heard. The ending is by Nowlu, with the track "Iki."

In a statement picked up by Skream!, Tempalay explains that the starting point was the Shakespeare quote that opens the manga: "I was inspired by the Shakespeare passage quoted at the beginning of Fool Night. I tried to express the thirst for life, the contradiction and the escape, with the light found in the middle of despair as the central theme." The band adds that it has reflected the content of the work "in my own way and without reservation," and encourages people to enjoy both the anime and the original comic.

Award-winning manga and an unusual production

Fool Night began as a manga by Kasumi Yasuda. The work made the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023 list and won the best suspense award at that year's Japan Expo Awards, in addition to surpassing one million copies in circulation. The anime adaptation brings together for the first time two studios with very different histories: Sunrise, known for the Gundam franchise, and Shaft, responsible for Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series.

The combination makes sense within the source material. Fool Night presents a near future where people can transform into plants to survive, a science fiction premise with an intimate and murky component that fits both Sunrise's industrial machinery and Shaft's more abstract staging.

Tempalay is not a new name in Japanese fiction. The psychedelic rock trio has contributed songs to series such as the drama Aono-kun ni Sawaritai kara Shinitai. "Shake! spit out" stays in that lane: psychedelic melody and lyrics meant to dialogue with the world of the series, as the statement notes.

The main trailer already lets you hear the song over Sunrise and Shaft's animation. The production has chosen to show a fair amount of material in this preview, which is common when the release is in one batch rather than weekly.

Global release on November 26

Netflix will distribute Fool Night worldwide starting November 26. The platform has not split the season: the episodes will arrive complete on the same day, a decision that also affects how the music is consumed. Without a weekly broadcast, the opening and ending work more as presentation pieces than as themes that accompany viewers for months.

The anime team keeps the official X account active as its main information channel. Both the Tempalay announcement and the trailer have been posted there.
