Across the Strange Edge launches Kickstarter for its second English volume and a deluxe edition
The campaign opens on November 19 with a goal of 7,000 euros and a special cover by Takashi Kumatani
The manga Across the Strange Edge (Okashiki Sekai no Kyōkaisen) will have its second volume in English. Its creator, Yayū Murata, announced a Kickstarter campaign to fund that volume and, along the way, a deluxe hardcover compilation book that will collect the first two volumes.
According to Anime News Network, the project will open on November 19, 2026, and will seek to raise 7,000 euros, about 7,900 dollars, before December 17. The deluxe edition will include a special cover designed in collaboration with Takashi Kumatani.
What the campaign includes
If funding is secured, the books are planned to arrive in physical and digital formats in May 2027. Two more deluxe hardcover volumes are also planned to complete the collection.
Among the rewards in this new round are an original shikishi illustration, the traditional rigid support for Japanese art, and art prints. This is not the first time Murata has used this model for the English edition of his work.
The precedent of the first volume
Murata launched the campaign for the first volume on April 1, 2026. That project raised 8,774 euros, approximately 9,900 dollars, against an initial goal of 3,200 euros, about 3,600 dollars. Shipping of physical rewards began on September 8.
The first campaign page allows you to check that precedent. It is the volume 1 project; the current announcement corresponds to a new round to continue the English edition and develop the compilation.
A friendship next to a supernatural border
The story follows Misuzu, a girl who has grown up without knowing what it means to have a true friend. She lost her mother as a child and her father was constantly busy; with little emotional expression, she finds it hard to form deep bonds.
Her classmate Chizuru is cheerful and energetic, but she lives a different kind of isolation: she can see beings from beyond this world, an ability that causes rejection from those around her. The two grow closer during the night of a summer festival, after an unsettling incident.
When their classmates are about to trick Misuzu into giving them money, Chizuru appears with a warning from the spirit that remains behind her. From that meeting on, the two begin to share the worlds they inhabit and form a special bond during that summer.
The closer they get, the more they move toward a border they were not supposed to cross; their respective realities begin to pull them apart. The work combines the intimacy of a budding friendship with the danger of the supernatural.
From an award-winning one-shot to a completed series
Across the Strange Edge began as a one-shot on Manga ONE, Shogakukan's platform, where it won an award. Its serialization started there in 2020 and the publisher released the fifth and final compiled volume in August 2021. The English campaign seeks to expand access to a work already completed in Japan.
As a precedent of his recent career, Murata finished Unjō ni Utaite, Kimi wo Matsu, also known as I'm singing above the cloud, waiting for you., on March 6, 2026. That manga had debuted in July 2024; Houbunsha published its fifth volume on March 13.
The author also offers a sample of Across the Strange Edge in his GlobalComix post, where he introduces the protagonists and the premise of the manga.
