Mashle live-action movie opens March 19, 2027 with Mackenyu in the lead
Warner Bros. and Fuji TV produce the adaptation of Kōmoto Hajime's manga, directed by Fukuda Yūichi.
There is now a date for the live-action Mashle movie: it opens in Japan on March 19, 2027. The actor bringing Mash Burnedead to life is Mackenyu, who has spent about three years getting in shape for the role.
The news comes with a first visual that hints at the protagonist's mushroom-shaped haircut and the uniform of the prestigious Easton Magic Academy. According to the statement, the actor has worked on his body from the moment he received the offer until the start of filming, and the result is noticeable even under the robe.
From the pages of Jump to the big screen
The movie adapts Mashle: Magic and Muscles, the manga by Kōmoto Hajime that ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump between January 2020 and July 2023. The series has 12 million copies in circulation worldwide and has already been adapted into anime, novels, stage plays, and video games.
The story takes place in a world where magic is everything and defines each person's worth. Mash cannot use a single bit of magic, but he makes up for it with daily physical training that gives him monstrous strength. To protect his adoptive father, he sets out to become a Divine Visionary, the highest rank among mages.
The anime has been a phenomenon of its own. The second season, which aired in 2024, rode the global success of "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born," the Creepy Nuts opening, and reached the top spot on several streaming services in Japan. It also earned two nominations at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The third season premieres in January 2027, just two months before the movie.
A team with experience in adaptations
Directing duties go to Fukuda Yūichi, known for the Gintama films and for the recent Sakamoto Days adaptation. Production is handled by Warner Bros., the same studio behind the Harry Potter films, and Fuji TV, while CREDEUS is in charge of production. It is the studio that has worked on Kingdom, Sakamoto Days, and Kokuhō, the highest-grossing Japanese live-action film in history.
Distribution in Japanese theaters falls to Tōhō. For now there is no news about an international release or which platform might carry the movie outside Japan.
The combination of Fukuda, Mackenyu, and a manga that mocks the tropes of the magic genre points to a show as absurd as it is entertaining. Would you watch it if it comes to your country? Tell us in the comments.
