Horror webtoon Bongcheon-Dong Ghost hits the big screen with A-rim and Yoon Chan-young
The adaptation directed by Han Dong-suk has already begun filming, bringing the urban legend to a supernatural horror movie.
The webtoon that spread panic across the internet is getting a movie. Bongcheon-Dong Ghost has confirmed its two leads, and cameras have been rolling since October 5. OH MY GIRL, A-rim's group, and actor Yoon Chan-young head the cast of this supernatural horror adaptation.
The story follows Soo-yeon, a young woman who starts experiencing strange phenomena in an apartment in Bongcheon-dong. The building sits on a valley where shamans once held rituals, and that's not exactly the best location for a quiet life.
A-rim plays Soo-yeon, who ends up possessed by a ghost. Yoon Chan-young brings to life Tae-oh, a young man with the ability to see spirits. Together they will pull at the thread to uncover the origin of a curse that has been hidden in the neighborhood for centuries.
The webtoon that terrified with motion and sound
The original webtoon is the work of artist Horang. When it was published, it didn't just shock readers with the ghost's image, but with an unusual storytelling approach: it used animations and sound effects to strike fear deep into the reader. Those who read it didn't just see the story—they experienced it.
The film takes that urban legend and expands it for the big screen. The horror settles into spaces we all recognize: the apartment, the elevator, the alley. No haunted mansions or distant castles. The fear is right next door.
A director with experience in the supernatural
Behind the camera is Han Dong-suk, who previously directed The Sin, a supernatural horror film that made it to the official selection of the Brussels International Film Festival. With that background, he seems like the right fit to translate the webtoon's digital format into cinematic language.
After completing her first day of shooting, A-rim explained that she wants to prepare thoroughly for the upcoming scenes and deliver a film that combines a solid story with an intense horror atmosphere. Yoon Chan-young, for his part, said he will try to show a Tae-oh with more nuances with each passing day.
The big question is how that ghost that caused so many scares in webtoon form will look in live action. The source material already proved that horror works best when it seeps into everyday life. Now it remains to be seen whether the film can achieve the same with the elevator, the hallway, and the same old street.
