Oishinbo returns with a new anime 35 years later, revealing cast and theme songs
Shin Oishinbo will premiere in 2027 with the full Tozai editorial team and new actors for the classic characters.
Oishinbo is back on TV. The gourmet manga by Tetsu Kariya and Akira Hanasaki will get a new anime adaptation titled Shin Oishinbo, set to premiere in 2027. It has been 35 years since the previous anime ended, and this time it arrives as a full continuation produced by Shin-Ei Animation.
The announcement includes six new cast members and the artists behind the opening and ending themes. The story picks up the clash between the Tozai newspaper's "Ultimate Menu" and Yuzan Kaibara's "Supreme Menu," but adds a new plotline: the arrival of Dan Ichiro, the young president of Daiken Publishing, who falls in love with Yuko Kurita and complicates her relationship with Shiro Yamaoka.
The cast of Shin Oishinbo
The leads had already been announced: Yohei Azakami as Shiro Yamaoka, Hitomi Sasaki as Yuko Kurita, and Akio Otsuka as Yuzan Kaibara. Now six more actors join to complete the culture desk of the Tozai newspaper.
Yu Furuzawa plays Hideo Tanimura, the deputy editor and head of culture, a calm man who shields his subordinates from the owner's demands. Kosuke Echigoya, known for voicing Sergeant Kururu in Keroro Gunsō, will play Tomio Tomii, the deputy head of culture: a guy who flatters his superiors, treats his subordinates badly, and has a bad reputation with alcohol, but deep down isn't unlikeable.
Nobuo Tobita, the voice of Kamille Bidan in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, plays Daizo Ohara, the owner of the Tozai newspaper who launched the "Ultimate Menu" to celebrate the company's centennial. Hiroshi Naka, who voices Monkey D. Garp in One Piece, plays Kyoichi Koizumi, the editor-in-chief: proud and stubborn, humble before the owner, and authoritarian with his employees.
The female team is completed by Anzu Yagoya as Kinue Arakawa, a journalist with a past as a juvenile delinquent who mentors Yuko, and Yuko Ushida as Noriko Mitani, a colleague in the section who married the owner of a rice cracker shop and has a son.
The songs of the return
The opening will be PROMISE ME, performed by Yui Makino, who works as a voice actress in addition to singing. The ending, Shō (証), is by Skoop On Somebody.
The original manga has over 135 million copies in circulation and already had live-action and anime adaptations. The new series keeps the 90s setting and recovers the tone of the classic work, with cooking and personal drama at its core.
