Media Do Assures Seven Seas Will Not Use AI to Translate Manga
The publisher will keep its human translators and editors after the $80 million acquisition
Image from Anitsu's original edition. Media Do issued a statement saying it has no plans for Seven Seas Entertainment to use artificial intelligence to translate manga or other works. The announcement comes after its subsidiary Media Do International revealed the acquisition of the publisher for $80 million.
The company assured that Seven Seas will continue working with human translators and editors, that there will be no changes to the staff, and that the publisher will remain under its current leadership and team.
Media Do also clarified that its MDTS system, based on language models, is designed to help Japanese translators manage translated texts of Japanese literature. It is not intended for Seven Seas' operations.
Seven Seas was founded by Jason DeAngelis in 2004 and, before the purchase, was the largest independent publisher of English-language manga and light novels. Its catalog includes Japanese manga, Korean webtoons, manhwa, and Chinese and Thai novels.
