Hana-Kimi returns in anime form: A nostalgic tribute with an exciting first look

The iconic story of Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (Hana-Kimi to fans) is making the leap to animation, and Crunchyroll has shared the first official preview of this highly anticipated adaptation. The one-minute trailer gives us the first scenes in motion and reveals the voice cast for its main trio: Aya Yamane as Mizuki Ashiya, Taku Yashiro as Izumi Sano, and Kikunosuke Toya as Shuichi Nakatsu.

This project not only marks a milestone in the history of the work, but also serves as a tribute to its author, Hisaya Nakajo, who passed away in October of last year. Hana to Yume magazine, where the manga was originally published, has expressed its enthusiasm for the production and its involvement in it, highlighting the story's lasting impact on generations of readers.

Hana-Kimi and its many adaptations

For those who have followed the story over the years, Hana-Kimi is no stranger to the world of live-action. Its first television adaptation arrived in Taiwan in 2006, followed by two Japanese versions in 2007 and 2011, the latter reaching a record audience of over 17 rating points. In 2012, South Korea released its own version under the title To the Beautiful You, cementing the story's status as a benchmark in youth romantic dramas.

The original manga was published between 1996 and 2004, compiled into 23 volumes in its standard edition and later into 12 volumes in aizouban format. Although in Spain the publisher Planeta DeAgostini acquired the rights, its publication was interrupted after only three volumes, leaving fans waiting for a complete reissue.

A disguised romance and a secret identity

The story of Hana-Kimi follows Mizuki Ashiya, a young Japanese-American track and field enthusiast who decides to move to Japan to attend the same school as her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano. The catch? It's an all-boys academy. Without hesitation, Mizuki decides to disguise herself as a boy and enroll in the school to be close to him.

But fate has an even bigger surprise in store: not only will they be classmates, but also roommates. From here, a story full of entanglements, comedic moments, and intense emotions begins, where Mizuki must keep her secret at all costs, dodging suspicion in the classroom, the locker room, and even her own dorm room. Meanwhile, her classmates (and even the school staff) begin to question their own feelings in the presence of the mysterious transfer student.
