WIT Studio publicly apologized this Friday after confirming that it used generative artificial intelligence in some background cuts of the opening for Ascendance of a Bookworm Part 3. The announcement came after fans noticed strange visual patterns in the opening sequence of the first episode, which aired on April 4.

The studio explained that it investigated its production process after receiving feedback about the episode and found that part of the background art in the opening had been generated with AI. Although WIT Studio states that it does not allow this technology in its regular productions as a rule, it attributed what happened to failures in its management and inspection and took full responsibility.

The company will redraw the affected cuts and replace the opening with a completed version starting from the second episode. It also clarified that the art director and the background studio NAM HAI ART were not involved in the incident, and that no other use of generative AI in the series has been confirmed.

The production committee also issued an apology and announced that the opening will be replaced in the DVD and Blu-ray releases, as well as in the first episode available on streaming platforms. The first two DVD releases, scheduled for April 29 and May 20, were delayed to June 10.
