Kubo reveals he drew two new characters exclusively for the end of the Bleach anime
The report from the pre-episode 50 event uncovers production secrets from the Thousand-Year Blood War saga, including an alternate route for Orihime.
The Bleach anime comes to an end this October 26 with episode 50, and a day earlier the team gathered fans for a very special event in Tokyo. On October 25, episodes 41 through 49 were screened at United Cinemas Aqua City Odaiba, with Masakazu Morita (Ichigo), Noriaki Sugiyama (Uryū), author Tite Kubo, director Hikaru Murata, and animation producer Yoshihiko Tominaga in attendance. The official report left several juicy revelations, with Kubo confirming that he designed new characters for the finale.
The panel reviewed the final stretch of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Conflict, the fourth and last cour of the adaptation that closes a 22-year story. Tominaga explained that the concept of the arc never changed from the start: to capture the Bleach that Kubo drew and that fans imagined. For the final stretch, the team sought to raise the technical bar. Murata detailed that they used more CGI in character effects to free up resources in other areas.
Episode 45 and the route where Orihime died
One of the most talked-about moments was episode 45, "DEFEND YOU," completely original to the anime. Tominaga said that chief director Tomohisa Taguchi wrote the script, the storyboards, and directed the entire episode, something that had not happened before in this cour. "I told him to do whatever he wanted, without reservations," he recalled. Morita admitted he was surprised when he saw the final result, because during the voice recording the animation was not finished.
Kubo went further and dropped a bomb: the shocking Orihime scene comes from a route he considered in the original manga. The author explained that when the team proposes original scenes to him, his criterion is whether he ever contemplated that idea for the work. In Orihime's case, there was indeed a version where she died, and he himself suggested which technique to use to develop it in the anime.
The return to the manga in episode 46
After the original detour, episode 46 returned to the source material with the duel between Uryū and Haschwalth. Murata confirmed that the decision was made during the script phase: the plan was always to return to the manga's route at that point. Sugiyama said that rereading the manga before recording helped him calibrate how much emotion to release in the original scenes, and that he built the performance together with Yūichirō Umehara, the voice of Haschwalth.
Episode 49, "THE BLADE," also had its adjustments. Kubo revealed that he asked to change the order of a key moment: in the scene where Ichigo and Ryūnosuke attack Yhwach in the three worlds at once, originally the first strike was Ryūnosuke's. Kubo intervened so that Ichigo's sword was the first to land. Murata added that they distinguished the three Yhwachs with different lighting colors, so the viewer wouldn't get lost when the setting changed.
The final episode and Kubo's secret characters
The closing comes with "DEATH & STRAWBERRY," which adapts the ten-year time skip after the battle against Yhwach. Kubo held nothing back: in addition to following the manga, he drew extra details and designed characters that will only appear in this episode. "There are two new characters, two older gentlemen," he said with a laugh. "I don't know if they'll use one or both, but keep an eye out." The author himself confessed that he still hasn't seen the finished episode and that he'll watch it with the audience.
Tominaga closed with an honest message about the pressure of working on such a franchise for five or six years. Murata promised an ending that lives up to it. Morita, already in Ichigo's skin, let out a "make sure you watch it!" before the traditional "Bankai!" shout that closed the event amid applause.
Episode 50 airs tonight on TV Tokyo and its affiliates, with staggered schedules on other channels during November. The anime puts an end to a story that began 22 years ago.
