Megumi Ogata Celebrates Japan's Move Toward AI Regulation
The voice of Shinji Ikari reacts to the Ministry of Justice study group on deepfakes and unauthorized voice use
Image from the original Anitsu edition. Voice actress Megumi Ogata, known for playing Shinji Ikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion, expressed relief after Japan's Ministry of Justice announced the creation of a study group to address rights infringements related to generative AI.
In a post on X dated April 18, 2026, Ogata thanked those involved in the negotiations and described the government's move as having finally reached "the starting line." The seiyuu added the hashtag #NOMORE無断生成AI and stated that she will continue to closely follow the development of legal reforms.
The expert panel will examine how to handle problems caused by AI-generated voices and images, including deepfakes. The Ministry of Justice has been discussing civil liability for the unauthorized use of voices through generative AI, an issue the Japanese voice acting industry has long been calling to address.
