Set fifty years after the events depicted in Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Aoki Uru follows a new generation of fighter pilots. They operate in a world transformed by the technological and societal leaps of the preceding half-century, where the legacy of the first space mission casts a long shadow.
The narrative explores the lives, conflicts, and missions of these pilots as they navigate the complexities of this advanced era. The film delves into their personal struggles and the immense pressures they face in the cockpit and beyond, against a backdrop of lingering geopolitical and existential tensions from the past.
Originally planned by Gainax in the early 1990s, the ambitious project was halted due to financial constraints. Decades later, the film was resurrected, with original director Hiroyuki Yamaga and character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto returning to finally realize this long-dormant chapter in the Honneamise universe.
