In a distant future, humanity lives in mobile fortress cities called Plantations after being driven to near-extinction by giant monsters known as Klaxosaurs. Children raised in these cities are trained from birth to pilot giant mechas called FranXX in boy-girl pairs, the only weapons capable of fighting the creatures. They know nothing of the outside world and exist solely to defend their race.
Hiro, once a prodigy pilot, has lost his confidence after failing an aptitude test. While wandering away from his class, he meets a mysterious girl with two horns named Zero Two, infamous as the "Partner Killer." When a Klaxosaur attacks, Zero Two's partner dies, and she invites Hiro to pilot her FranXX with her. Together, they achieve a victory that gives Hiro a chance at redemption, but piloting with Zero Two comes at a dangerous cost.
