Takumigraphics reveals new preview of Wandering Cat's Cage manga

Akane Torikai's single volume goes on sale in English on October 27 with 334 pages.

Mariana García 26 October 2026

Takumigraphics, Fantagraphics' East Asian comics imprint, shared the latest preview of Akane Torikai's Wandering Cat's Cage manga. The English edition, translated by Jocelyne Allen, arrives tomorrow, October 27, 2026, in a 334-page hardcover volume.

The release was originally scheduled for May 26 of this year, but was moved to now. Torikai serialized this manga in Kadokawa's Da Vinci magazine between June 2017 and September 2018. In Japan it was collected in two tankobon volumes, and now the Western edition arrives in a single omnibus volume.

A dystopia where reproduction is controlled

The story is set in the near future. Very few women can menstruate and even fewer men will be born from them. Reproduction depends on medical interventions controlled from above, and the structures of the past barely survive in the remains of a world that no longer exists.

Inside The City, women lead bright, happy, and strictly monitored lives. But across the river, in a shantytown, life is humble, sometimes dangerous, and free. That's where Sanada lives, a young acupuncturist, with Reiho, the only man she has ever known, who sells himself to the rich women who cross the river looking for something they have never experienced.

Sanada and Reiho form a small family and take in other young women expelled from The City. Everything gets complicated when Reiho is kidnapped at gunpoint and taken to The City's reproduction program. Sanada will have to ally with the other outcasts to rescue him and face difficult truths about love, community, and the future.

The imprint and its alliance with Mangasplaining

Takumigraphics launched in 2025 and announced the license of several titles, including Yudori's Lovers of the Empire, whose first volume came out in August. Wandering Cat's Cage is Fantagraphics' latest release in collaboration with MSX: Mangasplaining Extra, the publishing initiative of the Mangasplaining podcast.

The combination of Torikai with Jocelyne Allen's translation is one that draws attention. Allen has been translating manga for years and her name on a project already says a lot about the care expected in the edition.
