Katsura Masakazu draws a beauty full of resentment and social media goes wild
The author of 'I''s' and 'Video Girl Ai' posts a new illustration from his occult series on X
Manga artist Katsura Masakazu has stirred up social media once again. The author of classics like I''s, Video Girl Ai, and Wingman posted a new illustration from his "occult series 'Ren'" on his X account, this time with resentment as the central theme. The image shows a woman of unsettling beauty dressed in a traditional kimono.
\n\nThis is not the first time Katsura has explored this territory. Lately he has been sharing drawings of female ghosts, and this new piece joins that line with a finish that has left his followers speechless. The combination of classical elegance and a gaze charged with darkness has sparked a wave of reactions.
\n\nA beauty that attracts and disturbs in equal measure
\n\nComments on the post came quickly. Some confess they are "about to fall in love," while others point out how disturbing it is to see the face up close. One user notes that the madness in the eyes is impressive, but what really gets them is the line from the ear to the jaw, the shape of the lips, and the texture. Another points out that the nape, the sideburns, and the braiding convey a sense of life in every curve.
\n\nOthers sum up the piece as a coexistence of the seductive and the abyssal. And Katsura has always had a special talent for drawing female beauty with a realism that borders on obsessive. Here he takes it to a darker territory, where the appeal cannot be separated from a latent threat.
\n\nA veteran who keeps surprising
\n\nKatsura Masakazu was born in 1962 and debuted in 1981 in Weekly Shōnen Jump with Tenkōsei wa Hensōsei!?. Since then he has created works that marked an entire generation, such as Video Girl Ai, I''s, and ZETMAN. He has also worked outside manga, designing the characters and hero suits for the anime Tiger & Bunny.
\n\nThat an author with more than four decades of career keeps posting illustrations capable of generating this kind of buzz says a lot about his staying power. It is not an announcement of a new series or the cover of a volume: it is simply a drawing shared on social media. And even so, it has been enough to make thousands of people stop and look twice.
