Al and Rey's voice actors in Romelia War Chronicle talk about their characters
Jin Ogasawara and Tomohiro Ono break down in an interview how they understand the two knights who accompany Romelia and what they bring to the series.
The anime adaptation of Romelia War Chronicle premiered its second part in October 2026, and with it came the characters Al and Rey, two of the knights who accompany the protagonist. The actors who voice them, Jin Ogasawara and Tomohiro Ono, spoke in an interview with Animate Times about how they approach their roles and what they think of the world of the series.
The series adapts Ryō Ariyama's light novel, Romelia War Chronicle: After Defeating the Demon King, Humanity Is Still in Danger, So I Raised an Army. It tells the story of Romelia, daughter of Count Graham, whose fiancé, Prince Anri, abandons her right after she has defeated the Demon King. Far from falling apart, Romelia decides to take charge and build her own army to rebuild her country.
Two characters, two ways of understanding loyalty
Ogasawara describes Al as a man with a very firm core and, above all, as the one in charge of bringing passion to the group. He is not a calculating person, and that is why he tends to clash with others, but everything he does comes from the affection he feels for his companions. At first he struggles to accept Romelia, someone outside his circle, and the actor admits he shares that initial distrust toward someone who enters a group from outside.
Ono, for his part, auditioned for both Al and Rey. He ended up with Rey, a more insecure character who gives himself body and soul to a single goal. The actor admits he is not shy like him, but he does understand that way of obsessing over a goal: it happens to him with his work as a voice actor.
The two agree that Romelia, played by Yuna Nemoto, is a peculiar protagonist. She is brilliant and knows how to handle situations, but she barely lets anyone see what she really thinks. Ono admits he has a hard time dealing with people who do not show themselves as they are, and Ogasawara jokes that, if he had to live with her, he would end up asking her to earn the group's trust instead of keeping things to herself.
A world with many open fronts
The interview also serves to talk about the tone of the series. Although the starting point is reminiscent of stories about villainesses or banished heroes, both actors insist that Romelia War Chronicle goes down a different path. Ogasawara points out that all the characters, even the supporting ones and the enemies, have their own lives and reasons for acting the way they do. They are not mere extras.
The voice cast is completed by Yūya Hirose as Anri, Sayaka Senbongi as Elizabeth, Mariya Ise as Ekaterina, and Asaka as Ryoki, among others. The series has been airing since October 5, 2026 on Tokyo MX and other Japanese networks.
