Shinran, a Japanese Buddhist monk, lives during the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. He becomes a disciple of Honen and develops the teachings of Jodo Shinshu, a school of Pure Land Buddhism that emphasizes salvation through faith in Amida Buddha. The OVA follows his spiritual journey and the challenges he faces in spreading his message.
As Shinran's teachings gain followers, he encounters opposition from established Buddhist institutions and the political powers of the time. Exiled and persecuted, he continues to write and preach, seeking to bring hope and spiritual liberation to common people. The story explores his dedication to his faith and the impact of his ideas on Japanese Buddhism.
