Cyberpunk 2077 hits 3-year player peak thanks to Edgerunners 2

Cyberpunk 2077 is back among Steam's top sellers. The release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 on Netflix and the game's 2.5 update have reignited interest in CD Projekt RED's title, which this week recorded its highest concurrent player peak in three years.

According to Steam sales data, the game has climbed 20 spots globally and now sits in fifth place, third if free-to-play titles are excluded. Its expansion, Phantom Liberty, has also entered the top 10, landing at number nine.

In Japan the jump is even more striking: 32 positions week over week, reaching sixth place. The concurrent player peak hit 124,145 people around midnight on October 24, a number not seen since the launch of Phantom Liberty in late September 2023.

The Edgerunners effect, again

The first season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, released in 2022, already sparked a revival for the game. Millions of viewers finished the TRIGGER series and rushed to buy Cyberpunk 2077 to keep exploring Night City. With the sequel, history repeats itself.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiered on Netflix on October 20 with 10 episodes. Two days later, CD Projekt RED released update 2.5, which adds anime-inspired content to the game: a new side quest that works as a prequel to the series, the ability to dual-wield pistols like Jackie, items based on the character King, and a radio station with songs from the franchise.

The development team has bet heavily on the connection between both formats. The anime recreating real in-game locations with such fidelity has also encouraged many players to do their own pilgrimage through the series' settings inside the game itself.
