Made in Abyss announces a second film in its new movie series

A franchise that alternates between TV and film

The story of Made in Abyss follows Riko, an orphan who dreams of becoming a legendary explorer like her missing mother. Her life changes when she finds Reg, a boy with a mechanical body, in the huge abyss that gives the series its name. Together they descend in search of Riko's mother, and along the way they encounter strange creatures, ancient relics, and dangers that worsen the deeper they go.

The Abyss is the core of the premise. It holds valuable artifacts and remnants of lost civilizations, but returning from its depths can bring a curse. Every expedition is a risk.

Akihito Tsukushi writes and illustrates the original manga, which began online publication in 2012. Kinema Citrus produced the first TV season, aired in 2017, followed by the film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020. The second TV season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, aired in 2022.

With this new series of films, the franchise returns to the theatrical format. The first installment, Mezameru Shinpi, is already in Japanese theaters, and the second is confirmed with no further details.

What remains unknown
