Science SARU is working on a new Ghost in the Shell anime

Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced that Ghost in the Shell will get a new anime project from Science SARU. The news came out this Friday at the Dover Street Market Ginza open house, during the presentation of the Geeks Rule clothing line.

The company has not specified the format of this new animation. It could be another TV series, one or more OVAs, or even a movie. There are also no dates or details about the team involved.

A clue in Masamune Shirow's manga

The announcement comes right as the broadcast of Major Motoko Kusanagi's adventures ended. At that time, the studio shared an image on X/Twitter that matched the Prologue, the first chapter of the Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface manga, the sequel to Masamune Shirow's original story.

That clue points directly to the manga's continuation, although some fans hope the new project will be related to Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor. That story takes place between the first and second volumes, and it gives more weight to the members of Public Security Section 9. Man-Machine Interface, on the other hand, starts as a different story with other characters.

The image shared by Science SARU makes it clear that the reference is Man-Machine Interface, not the intermediate installment. Still, we'll have to wait for the studio to confirm which part of Shirow's universe it will adapt.

The return of an essential franchise

Science SARU already handled the most recent adaptation of Koukaku Kidoutai: THE GHOST IN THE SHELL. The studio will take charge of the franchise once again.

Masamune Shirow's original work is one of the pillars of Japanese cyberpunk. Major Motoko Kusanagi and Section 9 have spent decades starring in manga, movies, and series that have influenced countless later works inside and outside Japan.

For now there is no more information about this new project or when the final format will be revealed.
