Japan Inc.: An Introduction to Japanese Economics

マンガ日本経済入門

In the mid-1980s, Japanese cars are being burned in Detroit. At Toyosan Motors, top management debates whether to move production to the United States. Mr. Kudo, a dedicated employee, fears that offshore manufacturing will devastate the local subcontractors that depend on the company, leading to a hollowing out of Japan's auto industry. His rival, Mr. Tsugawa, sees the move as a chance to break unions and boost profits.

This first episode sets the stage for a series of stories that explore key economic issues from a Japanese perspective. Other chapters cover the appreciation of the yen, the oil shocks of the 1970s, deficit financing, the internationalization of business and banking, and the post-industrial future of Japan and the Pacific Rim. Through corporate drama and real-world data, the manga explains complex economic concepts in an accessible way.
