Master of the Gensenkan Inn

Master of the Gensenkan Inn

ゲンセンカン主人

A collection of twelve short stories by Yoshiharu Tsuge, originally published in the legendary manga magazine Garo between 1965 and 1970. The tales range from surreal and psychological to grounded and melancholic, often following ordinary people caught in strange or unsettling situations. A man with a mysterious injury seeks help in a bizarre seaside town, a traveler encounters a peculiar innkeeper, and a young boy goes mushroom hunting with unexpected consequences.

Tsuge's work explores themes of alienation, memory, and the uncanny, blending everyday life with dreamlike or nightmarish elements. Each story presents a unique glimpse into the human condition, where reality shifts and characters confront their own fears and desires. The title story, "Master of the Gensenkan Inn," exemplifies this with its eerie atmosphere and ambiguous narrative.
