Akai Hana

A collection of ten short stories by Yoshiharu Tsuge, originally published in the legendary alternative manga magazine *Garo* between 1967 and 1970. The tales range from the titular "Red Flowers," a haunting story of a man's encounter with a mysterious woman in a rural inn, to "The Lee Family," a portrait of a Korean family living in post-war Japan. Other stories include "The Wake," a surreal account of a funeral, and "Scenes from the Seaside," a melancholic summer memory.

Tsuge's narratives often follow solitary, wandering protagonists who drift through the margins of Japanese society. They encounter strange characters, confront their own past traumas, and grapple with feelings of alienation and loss. The stories blend everyday realism with dreamlike, often unsettling, imagery, exploring themes of memory, identity, and the lingering shadows of war.
