New Witch on the Holy Night trailer previews supercell theme song
The ufotable film opens in Spanish theaters on February 5, 2027 and in Japan on November 20.
Crunchyroll published a new trailer for Witch on the Holy Night on its official YouTube channel last Tuesday. The video, about thirty seconds long, includes a preview of "Yoru to Ao," the main theme performed by supercell.
The film arrives in Spanish theaters on February 5, 2027, while the Japanese release is scheduled for November 20. That date is not far off: less than a month remains until Japanese audiences see it, and here the wait will be a couple of months longer.
The studio handling the animation is ufotable, which needs no introduction for anyone who has seen Demon Slayer or the Fate adaptations. Masaru Takeuchi directs, having previously worked as an episode director on Demon Slayer. Moe Tsuzuki, of Katsugeki: Touken Ranbu, is in charge of character designs, and Hideyuki Fukasawa, known for Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, composes the music.
The main cast brings back voices from the TYPE-MOON universe. Haruka Tomasu plays Aoko Aozaki, Kana Hanazawa voices Alice Kuonji, and Yūsuke Kobayashi plays Soujyuro Sizuki.
A 2012 visual novel with roots in the 90s
Witch on the Holy Night, originally titled Mahōtsukai no Yoru, began as a visual novel created by Kinoko Nasu with graphics by Hirokazu Koyama. TYPE-MOON released it in April 2012, but the story goes back further: it is based on a novel of the same name that Nasu himself wrote in 1995, with illustrations by Takashi Takeuchi.
The work stands out for the connections it establishes between characters from other titles by the same developer. There are links to Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, and The Garden of Sinners, something TYPE-MOON fans already know how to appreciate: everything is connected here in one way or another.
The story is set in the late 1980s and follows Aoko Aozaki, the youngest of a lineage of modern mages. Although the matter does not interest her much, she is chosen as the heir to the family's magical arts. She is sent immediately as an apprentice to the home of Alice Kuonji, a young witch who lives in a solitary mansion atop a hill.
Aoko begins to balance her training with her responsibilities on the student council. In the process she meets Sōjūrō Shizuki, a transfer student who is not very familiar with the modern world, and ends up clashing with her older sister, Tōko Aozaki, who feels she has been robbed of her inheritance rights as the firstborn. The conflict between sisters is the underlying engine of everything else.
With ufotable behind it and a cast that already knows the territory, the film looks to be a careful adaptation. The trailer shows little, barely half a minute, but enough to hear how the supercell theme sounds and to remember why this story has been spinning around in Nasu's head for three decades.
