Kaiju No. 8 movie opens in 2027 with the second season director

The Kaiju No. 8 anime is getting a movie. The feature film will open in 2027 and will have Shigeyuki Miya as solo director. Miya already directed the second season of the series, where he was credited as co-director.

Along with the announcement, a super teaser visual drawn by Shinji Kimura, background art director, was released. The image comes almost a year after it was confirmed that the anime adaptation was entering its "final chapter."

The original manga by Naoya Matsumoto ended in September 2025 with its 16th volume. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a man who dreams of joining the Japan Defense Force to fulfill a childhood promise to Mina Ashiro, captain of the Third Division. The problem is that Kafka himself ends up turned into a kaiju and is placed on the neutralization list under the codename Kaiju No. 8.

An expanding franchise

The first season of the anime aired between April and June 2024. The second arrived in July 2025, already with Shigeyuki Miya at the helm. In addition to the main series, the franchise has produced a special titled Hoshina's Day Off and the short series Narumi's Week at Work, which premiered this year.

The manga began serialization on Shonen Jump+ in 2020. The English edition is handled by VIZ Media and is also available on MANGA Plus.

Production staff

The movie keeps the main staff from the second season. Yuichiro Kido is in charge of series composition and script, after also handling the Hoshina special. Tetsuya Nishio returns as character designer and chief animation director, and Mahiro Maeda as kaiju designer. Studio Khara handles kaiju design and animation work, with Production I.G leading the production.

"Kafka hopes to one day fulfill his pact with his childhood friend Mina: to join the Japan Defense Force and fight by her side," reads the official VIZ Media synopsis.

The voice cast also returns: Masaya Fukunishi as Kafka Hibino, Asami Seto as Mina Ashiro, Wataru Kato as Reno Ichikawa, Fairouz Ai as Kikoru Shinomiya, and Kengo Kawanishi as Soshiro Hoshina.

The exact release date within 2027 has yet to be announced.
