Ghost of Tsushima Legends Anime Delayed to 2028
The series was set to premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027, but the schedule has shifted and its lead actors have now been confirmed.
The Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime will no longer arrive in 2027. The series, announced with the promise of an exclusive Crunchyroll premiere that year, now has a 2028 release date. The change was confirmed alongside the names of its two lead actors: Mayumi Saco and Shinya Fukumatsu.
The news comes just days after a work-in-progress trailer was shown during New York Comic Con 2026, as part of the Crunchyroll Showcase. Seeing a preview and then immediately learning that the premiere is still more than a year away leaves a bittersweet taste. Especially since the project was first announced in January 2025 and already has nearly two years of development behind it.
From Co-Op Mode to Standalone Series
Ghost of Tsushima Legends started as the cooperative multiplayer mode of the 2020 game Ghost of Tsushima, the open-world title from Sucker Punch Productions in which samurai Jin Sakai faced the Mongol invasion. That mode arrived after launch and received a standalone version in September 2021.
The game's sequel, Ghost of Yotei, came out in 2025. The fact that the anime draws from the co-op mode rather than Jin's main story says a lot about where the adaptation is heading: more narrative freedom, fewer ties to the first game's canon, and room to build something of its own.
A Heavyweight Team Behind It
The staff list was already known, but it's worth revisiting because it's no small thing:
- Director: Takanobu Mizuno, responsible for "The Duel" in Star Wars: Visions.
- Series Composition: Gen Urobuchi, of NITROPLUS, author of the Fate/Zero light novels, writer of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and creator of Thunderbolt Fantasy.
- Character Design: Takashi Okazaki, creator of the Afro Samurai manga.
- Animation Production: Kamikaze Doga.
Urobuchi on series composition is the detail that interests me most. His writing style fits the tone of Ghost of Tsushima: honor, sacrifice, decisions that cost lives. I don't expect a crowd-pleasing story. And Okazaki on character design could give it a visual identity very different from the game's.
Aniplex and Crunchyroll are producing through HAYATE, their joint venture focused on planning, developing, and producing anime for the streaming service. PlayStation Productions is also collaborating.
What's Still Unknown
The delay to 2028 comes with no official explanation for the reasons. There's also no specific window within the year or confirmation of how many episodes it will have. The names Mayumi Saco and Shinya Fukumatsu are now on the table, but there's still no word on which characters they play.
With a work-in-progress trailer shown in October 2026 and a 2028 premiere, the production still has room to polish the animation. Kamikaze Doga is not a huge studio, and projects like this usually need time. I'd rather have a delay than a half-baked series.
