Devil's Crest won't be another SAO: Kawahara talks horror and its 82 protagonists
The creator of Sword Art Online and director Shinji Ushiro explain how the Prime Video series separates itself from his most famous work.
Reki Kawahara doesn't want Devil's Crest to read as "another Sword Art Online". In an interview with Kakuchopurei, the author and director Shinji Ushiro explained how the anime adaptation leans into survival horror and a cast of 82 protagonists to step out of Kirito and Asuna's shadow.
The series arrives on Prime Video on November 6 and adapts Kawahara's own light novel. The story follows Yuuma Ashihara, a video game tester who watches the VR MMORPG he's testing at work start to bleed into the real world. What comes next isn't a sword-and-sorcery adventure: it's horror.
Horror as an emotional engine
Kawahara admitted his weakness for Stephen King and for horror as a tool to provoke strong emotions. "I write novels because I want to give readers very emotional moments, and scary moments are my number one way to achieve that," he explained.
A figure with long dark hair shows a menacing expression and sharp teeth. In Sword Art Online he already slipped in horror scenes, but he held back on purpose. With Devil's Crest he didn't have to restrain himself: as a survival horror series, he could integrate those moments without pulling punches. "I didn't have to put a brake on the horror elements. I could incorporate them intentionally to scare people and shift their emotions," he said.
The challenge of adapting without losing the story
Ushiro talked about the balance between showing the game's mechanics and not diluting the narrative. "If we emphasize the gimmick too much, we lose the story," he noted. The team includes several video game fans, and those internal conversations helped find the right point between the excitement of gameplay and the dramatic weight.
The central theme, according to Kawahara, is "facing your true self." Most of the characters are possessed by evil spirits that are nothing more than their dark sides. "They can't lie to that spirit, so they're forced to look at a part of themselves they had hidden," he explained. What matters isn't the possession itself, but what the characters do when they see themselves as they really are.
From Persona and Skyrim to augmented reality
Kawahara cited Shin Megami Tensei: Persona as a direct influence on the structure of Devil's Crest: an ordinary student who crosses into a mysterious world and fights there, with a clear border between both planes. "The demons are the devils, the crest is the fake magic," he detailed.
On augmented reality, the author confessed he hasn't used many AR devices, but he was surprised to discover there are already price tags that work only with QR codes and change throughout the day. Ushiro, for his part, admitted he doesn't like MMOs much: he prefers Skyrim and its freedom to collect, craft, and build.
A whole class trapped in the nightmare
The main cast of Devil's Crest are elementary school students with complicated relationships between them. Kawahara wants the audience to find a character they can identify with, like in real life. "I want them to feel that resonance with one or several characters and have fun as one more companion in this survival world."
Ushiro added that his theme when animating the work is "that people are alive." He's interested in what people think and what words they use when they're trapped together in the same room with no way out. For him, the series is a way to show humanity in extreme situations.
Kawahara closed with a detail that frames the project's ambition: 82 main characters. "I don't think there are many anime with this dynamic in recent years. I hope people enjoy this complex and rich human drama."
