Chinese Horror Classic Guishi 2028 Gets AI Anime for Under €80,000

Author Huang Xian will supervise the script, and the production will combine automated generation with manual retouching for a vertical-format adaptation.

The Chinese web novel Guishi 2028 (Strange Corpse 2028) is getting an AI-animated adaptation. The project was announced in September 2026 and is led by producer Hebei Buzheng Culture Communication, according to Sohu. The total budget will be kept between 500,000 and 800,000 yuan, far below the industry's usual productions.

The original work is a classic of horror and mystery in Chinese digital literature. In 2008, it reached first place on the horror, mystery, and suspense list of the portal Xiaoshuo Yuedu Wang. Since then, the series has accumulated more than ten million downloads and became the gateway to the genre for an entire generation of readers.

The adaptation is betting on a vertical format, designed for short-video platforms. It is not a traditional high-cost production nor mass-generated content without oversight. The team defines the project as a quality "theater in vignettes" with a hybrid production model.

The Author Isn't Just Licensing the Rights: He's Rewriting the World

Huang Xian, the creator of the work, isn't just signing the authorization. He is directly involved in supervising the script and has incorporated details from the universe that were never published during the original serialization. Hidden settings, character backstories, and elements of the internal mythology are now being integrated into the scripts.

The goal, according to the production company, is to preserve the unsettling atmosphere of the original. The production combines two phases: first, artificial intelligence generates a large volume of concept art for suspense scenes and environment previsualizations; then, senior animators manually adjust character expressions and the most delicate horror shots.

This method reduces the cost of complex scenes without falling into the usual problems of fully automated content: poor textures, logical jumps, and lack of visual coherence. The production company presents it as a middle ground between industrial animation and cheap generation.

The project opened a feedback channel with veteran readers from the preparation phase. Concept posters and storyboard fragments are published to gather opinions. Many followers from the early days have shared reading memories and details of classic scenes; some of those contributions have been incorporated into the production.

"Readers are no longer passive recipients of content, but together with the creators they close an emotional circle that extends for more than a decade," the outlet states.

Fewer Scares, More Depth

The adaptation doesn't just reproduce the scares of the original. The team builds on the series' suspense foundation and develops the elements that sustain it: the clash between the forensic perspective and popular beliefs, the moral decisions characters face when money is on the line, and a plot of fate and redemption that spans several generations.

The visual language has been updated for today's audience. The most dated horror expressions are toned down, while the search for truth and reflection on the human condition are reinforced. The intention is for a young viewer who hasn't read the novels to enter the story without feeling faced with a product stuck in 2008.

The production company has also set clear limits for the adaptation. All horror atmosphere must serve the mystery narrative. Gratuitous sensory provocation is ruled out. The project follows the principle of "honoring the classic and expressing itself positively" to prevent the adaptation from becoming an uncontrolled deconstruction.

The team is already working on the pacing of each episode for vertical viewing. The idea is to avoid stalling and maintain tension in every installment. In addition, the forensic science content and safety warnings from the original text are integrated naturally into the plot, aiming to combine entertainment and social value.

The project has reached preliminary broadcast agreements with several short-video platforms. A collaboration is also being prepared with local tourism resources in Huainan, the city in Anhui Province where part of the story is set. The idea is to create themed suspense visit points that connect the series with physical spaces.

The adaptation arrives at a time of market saturation for AI animation, where quick products that exploit nostalgia without caring about the result are abundant. Guishi 2028 proposes the opposite path: a contained budget, real author involvement, and a manual review process that aims to prove that niche classics can also work in new formats.
