TOHO animation announces new anime with teaser of an otter and a mysterious logo

The official announcement arrives on October 17 at 00:00, and the teaser shows a short-clawed otter alongside the brand 'Kawauso Agent'.

TOHO animation is preparing the announcement of a new TV anime for October 17 at 00:00 (Japan time). 24 hours before the announcement, Toho's label published a teaser that doesn't show the title: just a short-clawed otter and the logo of a company called Kawauso Agent.

Nothing else. No studio, no staff, no cast. The company lets the image speak for itself and lets the name of that supposed agency spark the first theories. It's a move we already know, but one that still works when the expectation is managed with precision.

A strategy that became a trend

The enigmatic announcement is nothing new. Aniplex has been using it for years with notable results. In 2024 it launched two campaigns with code names: "O" and "M". Both turned out to be the new installment of Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season. The strategy was simple: generate conversation without revealing the product until the last moment.

In 2025, the same Aniplex announced a project without a title, but with four confirmed voice actors: Ai Kayano, Kenichi Suzumura, Sōma Saitō and Fairouz Ai. The move was so unusual that it grabbed headlines for days. It later turned out to be Higashi no Tanzaburō wa Kamen Rider ni Naritai.

And there's more. A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio also hid the name of an original anime until they finally revealed Grow Up Show: Himawari no Circus-dan. The formula repeats because mystery sells, and because social media amplifies any visual clue in a matter of hours.

What the otter could mean

The choice of animal doesn't seem casual. The short-clawed otter is a small species, with social habits and expressive gestures. In Japan it has a certain presence in memes and viral content. TOHO animation using it as the main image suggests a light tone, maybe comedy, maybe something with anthropomorphic animals.

But the Kawauso Agent logo complicates the reading. Is it a spy agency? A fictional company within the story? A play on words with the corporate world? Without more context, any interpretation is valid. And that's exactly what the announcement is going for.

TOHO animation is no stranger to this type of move. The label, founded in 2012, has produced titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia or Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. Its catalog is broad and doesn't stick to a single genre, so the otter could be pushing either a school comedy or a corporate action story.

The only confirmed thing is the date. On October 17 at 00:00 in Japan we'll know what the otter agency is hiding. Until then, it's time to speculate with a single image and a name that sounds more like a Spy x Family spin-off than a serious anime. And maybe for that very reason, the move is already working.
