In the year 305 of the Alcian calendar, every human being is born with a Count: a number that rises or falls based on specific actions, from the kilometers a person walks to the number of people who praise their cooking. If that Count ever drops to zero, the person is dragged into the Abyss.
Hina is a young girl whose mother disappeared after her own Count reached zero. Following her mother's last request, Hina travels from town to town searching for the legendary hero of the Waste War, known as the Ace or the Red Baron.
During her journey she meets Licht, a masked vagrant with a Count of -999. Clownish, unpredictable, and obsessed with girls, he seems like the exact opposite of a hero. Yet beneath that absurd exterior, Licht may hold the key to the truth Hina is looking for.
