The Ondol Shack

The Ondol Shack

オンドル小屋

In 1960s Japan, a man named Suwa travels to a remote hot spring village in the mountains, hoping to find peace and solitude. He rents a small ondol shack, a traditional Korean-style heated room, and settles into a quiet routine of bathing, eating simple meals, and observing the local residents. The village is isolated, with few visitors, and Suwa's days pass slowly, marked by the changing weather and the sounds of nature.

As Suwa stays longer, he becomes increasingly aware of the villagers' quiet struggles and the harsh realities of their lives. The elderly innkeeper, a young woman with a troubled past, and other locals reveal their own burdens, while Suwa's own anxieties and memories begin to surface. The peaceful setting contrasts with the inner turmoil of the characters, creating a subtle tension. Suwa must confront his own reasons for seeking refuge and decide whether to remain in this fragile sanctuary or return to the outside world.
