During a summer visit to her grandparents' island, energetic sixth-grader Shiina Tamai discovers a strange, star-shaped creature in the sea. She names it Hoshimaru and is delighted to find it possesses supernatural abilities, such as flight and great strength, turning her summer into a seemingly magical adventure.
This dream quickly darkens as Shiina encounters other children who also possess similar creatures. Unlike her, these children have fully developed control over their partners and wield them for dark, destructive purposes. Shiina and Hoshimaru become unwillingly entangled in a hidden conflict where the line between fantasy and nightmare blurs.
