Tetsuro Hoshino is a young street urchin who dreams of trading his human body for an android one, which would grant him immortality and the social freedom androids enjoy. Such a body is far beyond his means, but rumor says that at the end of the line of the Galaxy Express, a train bound for the Andromeda Galaxy, there is a planet where they are given away for free.
When an Android Count murders his mother, Tetsuro has nothing left to hold him to his home planet. He sets out to board the train alone, seeking both the body he craves and a way to avenge his loss. He meets Maetel, a mysterious woman who offers him a ticket on one condition: that he travel as her companion.
Together they ride from planet to planet, each stranger than the last, and every stop gives Tetsuro time to reflect on what it means to be human and on the prospect of living forever.
