Ayako

奇子

In 1949, occupied Japan is undergoing drastic change. Land reform is breaking up the great estates, and for the archconservative Tenge family, that is a disaster. Patriarch Sakuemon is already bitter that one son returned alive from a prisoner-of-war camp instead of dying for the Emperor, and he is further shamed to learn that another son has ties to the communists. His only comfort is his youngest child, Ayako, who is both his daughter and his granddaughter.

Jirou Tenge, the second son, comes home from an American POW camp to find his family rotting from within. His elder brother, desperate to preserve what remains of the family patrimony, has offered his own wife to their father in exchange for his blessing. Other relatives have fallen into their own forms of corruption, and Jirou himself is coerced into spying for the Americans.

As the family's secrets and sins multiply, the youngest daughter Ayako becomes the one who must carry the weight of them all.
