Ven. Yin Shun

Ven. Yin Shun

In 742 AD, Japanese monks Yoei and Fusho travel to the Daming Temple in Yangzhou, China, to seek the help of Jian Zhen, the temple's abbot, in bringing Buddhist precepts to their homeland. When his own disciples hesitate to undertake the perilous journey, Jian Zhen volunteers himself.

From 743 AD onward, Jian Zhen attempts to sail to Japan multiple times, facing storms, shipwrecks, and other hardships. Despite losing his eyesight during these trials, he never wavers in his determination. On his sixth attempt, he finally succeeds, bringing with him Chinese artisans and his own medical knowledge, which would profoundly influence Japanese Buddhism, culture, and medicine.
