The Man Next Door

The Man Next Door

隣の野郎

For the man living next door, a quiet and restful sleep seems to be an elusive wish. Every night, as he settles into bed, his neighbor's peculiar activities shatter the silence. The sounds are not ordinary: they are absurd, chaotic, and increasingly surreal, turning his home into a stage for bizarre occurrences.

As the man struggles to understand what is happening, the boundary between reality and nightmare begins to dissolve. The neighbor's antics grow more outlandish, pulling the protagonist into a world where logic no longer applies. His attempts to confront or escape the situation only lead to more confusion and darkly comedic situations.

This experimental short animation from 1965, created by pioneer Yoji Kuri, uses minimalist visuals and a satirical tone to explore themes of urban frustration and the absurdity of daily life. The film captures a universal experience—the exasperation of living next to an unpredictable neighbor—while pushing the boundaries of animation as an art form.
