A golden statue of the Happy Prince stands high above the city, covered in gold leaf and precious jewels. From his pedestal, he sees the poverty and suffering of the townspeople below, and his heart, though made of lead, feels deep sorrow. A little swallow, who has stayed behind after his flock migrated, takes shelter at the statue's feet and becomes the Prince's messenger.
The Prince asks the swallow to pluck his jewels and gold leaf to give to those in need. One by one, the swallow delivers the treasures to the poor, from a sick child to a struggling writer. As winter approaches and the swallow grows weaker, the Prince's statue becomes dull and bare, yet both continue their mission of compassion until the very end.
