SAIGO

Takamori Saigo, known as the last true samurai, was born in Kagoshima in 1828 and died in the Battle of Shiroyama in 1877. Despite his legendary status, no photographs of him exist, only an etching and drawings. To bring him to life, the directors visited his descendants to learn about his facial features and characteristics.

In this experimental animation, Saigo returns to life and wanders through the towns and around Sakurajima, an active volcano in Kagoshima. The film uses penlights to create a unique visual experience, blending history with modern animation techniques.
