Rennyo and His Mother

Rennyo, a six-year-old boy, lives with his mother in a temple during a difficult period for Shin Buddhism in medieval Japan. His mother, a devoted follower of the Honganji school, calls him one day and reveals his destiny: he must revive the fortunes of their declining faith. After imparting this crucial message, she mysteriously disappears from the temple, leaving Rennyo alone with her words.

Taking his mother's prophecy to heart, Rennyo grows up in poverty and hardship. At the age of sixteen, he sets out on a journey to spread the teachings of Shin Buddhism across the land, determined to fulfill the destiny his mother entrusted to him. His path is marked by struggle and devotion as he seeks to restore the Honganji lineage.
