Chitose "Chiko" Kobayashi, a young Japanese actress, recalls her childhood in Japanese-occupied Korea during World War II. Her father leaves to fight in the war, her baby sister Miko dies of typhoid, and her beloved Korean maid Ohana is fired after a mistake that nearly costs Chiko her life. As she grows up, Chiko becomes aware of the harsh realities of colonial rule and the persecution of Koreans by the Japanese.
When the war ends, the roles reverse: the Japanese are now the unwanted ones, and the Koreans seek retribution. As Russian forces advance, Chiko's family must burn all their photographs, including Miko's, to avoid suspicion. Forced to flee, they join a group of men, women, and children struggling across the mountains toward the 38th Parallel, guided by the North Star. Along the way, they encounter a Korean man willing to help them escape the Russian soldiers, despite his own family having been killed by the Japanese.
