Makkuro na Obentou

Makkuro na Obentou

まっ黒なおべんとう

On the morning of August 6, 1945, a young boy named Shigeru leaves home for his job as a building excavator, carrying a bento lunchbox made by his mother. He never returns, as the atomic bomb is dropped on Hiroshima that day. His mother later finds his remains and, beside them, the bento box—completely blackened and carbonized by the blast.

This short film adapts the true story behind the charred lunchbox, now displayed at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. It follows a mother's search for her son and the discovery of the only object left intact, a silent witness to the tragedy.
