Less than a year after the events of the Macross 7 series, musician Basara Nekki leaves his band Fire Bomber and travels to the remote planet Zola. There, he encounters Elma, a young girl who is a devoted fan of his music. The planet becomes the stage for a new conflict when Basara discovers a group of majestic space whales migrating through the system. He must once again harness his unique Spiritia power, not for battle, but to protect these creatures. Basara finds himself opposing a ruthless army of poachers and even Elma's own father, Graham, who are determined to hunt the whales.
