Japanese-English Pictionary

ひゃっかずかん

A playful short film by Koji Yamamura that explores the connection between language and animation. Both in English and Japanese, words develop in parallel from 'A' to 'Z' (and from 'A' to 'Nn' in the Japanese syllabary), each new word taking the last syllable of the previous one. For example, 'Ant' leads to 'Take-off', which leads to '...', while in Japanese 'Ari' becomes 'Ririku', then 'Ku...'. As the words transform, the images metamorphose using a wide variety of animation techniques, including stop-motion, cut-out, and hand-drawn frames. The result is a visual and linguistic puzzle that turns the alphabet into a pictorial encyclopedia of animation itself, where each letter and syllable sparks a new creative form.
